No. 1 Canyon del Oro held off No. 8 Desert Mountain 1-0 to advance to the third round of the 5A baseball playoffs where the Dorados will face No. 5 Canyon View at the Tempe Diablo Stadium Thursday night. Canyon View knocked off No. 4 AZ College Prep 6-3 to advance.
After struggling to bring a runner across home plate, including a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the third inning, the Dorados went up 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth to secure the victory. Brayden Hoyler singled to the outfield with two outs and he stole second base three pitches later to get himself in scoring position for Bostyn Dart.
Dart took a full-count pitch to left field and Hoyler beat the throw home by a few feet for the score. Desert Mountain had one more chance and Pepperdine commit Zachary Durben started the top of the seventh off with single to put the potential tying run on but David Adams induced a fly ball, a fielder’s choice and a strikeout to end the game.
Adams (9-1) gave up two hits with no walks while collecting six strikeouts for the win. Everett Hagen (5-3) threw into the sixth and Bennett Nordini (1-4) also saw pitching action for Desert Mountain. Hoyler went 2-3 while Dart and Francisco Rivero had a hit each. Durben and Blake Sawyer reached for Desert Mountain.
Desert Mountain moves over to the elimination bracket where the Wolves will travel to AZ College Prep on Thursday.
