No. 14 Sunnyside beat No. 4 Marana 15-1 on Monday to even up the region series between the two power programs. Marana beat Sunnyside 6-3 less than two weeks ago to take the upper hand in the 6A South Region but both programs are now 4-1 in region play with No. 22 Tucson coming in next at 2-3.
In the 6-3 victory, Adella Foxhoven gave up three runs late in the game but her team was hot at the plate with Maya Cormell going 2-3 with double and two RBIs and Cadence Beck finishing 2-3 with a double. In all, the Tigers put together nine hits and committed zero errors in the field. Ashley Rosthenhausler threw for the Blue Devils in that game and she collected seven strikeouts but she also gave up five earned runs. Rosthenhausler also hit a three-run shot at the plate and she turned around and put Sunnyside on top of Marana in the second game on Monday with a two-run homer in the top of the first inning, which ultimately proved to be the winning runs.
The Tigers had a chance to strike back in the bottom of the first after putting two runners on with no outs but Rosthenhausler picked up three strikeouts to end the threat. The Blue Devils put together 17 hits in the victory and the Tigers managed five.
Rosthenhausler had seven strikeouts and she went 3-3 with a home run, double and five RBIs, Ariciana Puig went 2-3 with a home run and four RBIs and Malia Silva had a double and three RBIs. Marana freshman Addison Harvey went 2-2 with a double to lead the Tigers. Adella Foxhoven, Aubrianna Gray and Emma Winter saw pitching action for Marana.
Expect some movement in the rankings with the conference play-in tournament set for April 29 for teams ranked No. 9-No. 24 and the first round is slated for May 2. The Grand Canyon Softball Complex will be the setting for all state championship games this spring.
Marana (15-2) travels to West Point (16-3) on Wednesday and Sunnyside (13-8) hosts Rincon/University (2-18) on Thursday.
No. 14 Sunnyside standout Ashley Rosthenhausler picked up the win in a rare run-rule 15-1 victory at No. 4 Marana. Rosthenhausler had 7 Ks from the circle and she went 3-3 with homer, double and 5 RBIs at the plate. #azpreps365 pic.twitter.com/HABTHhfgJ1
