Division I No. 28 Canyon del Oro beat D-II No. 25 Salpointe 5-0 on Tuesday to improve to 4-2 on the year and the Lancers fell to 2-5. Both squads have youth on the first court with Dorado sophomore Rilynn Brown joining her sister, freshman Ava Brown, beating Salpointe freshmen Brooklyn Adams and Rainie Saffer 21-10 and 21-7.
The Lancers made it to the semifinal round last year but the 2026 roster is comprised of completely new athletes with no seniors listed under longtime indoor coach Amanda Larriva, who is taking over after successful stops at Sunnyside and Tucson High.
The Dorados finished 7-5 last year and the team did not make the playoffs. Dorado head coach Stuart Sherman played for legendary head coach Heather Moore-Martin at Catalina and Larriva served as an assistant under Martin at Salpointe. Only six athletes from last year are on the current 14-menber Dorado roster.
The Dorados are 2-0 in the South Section and the team will host section opponent No. 44 Cienega (1-7, 0-2) on Thursday and Salpointe opens up sectional play against Amphitheater (0-8, 0-0) on Wednesday.
