Brophy baseball prepares for rematch following walk-off against Corona del Sol

March 25, 2026 by Ian King, Arizona State University

Coming off a three-run, seventh-inning comeback victory, the Brophy Broncos are preparing to face the reigning state champion Corona del Sol Aztecs for the second consecutive game, this time on the road in Tempe on Thursday.

Following Tuesday’s win, the Broncos (11-1, 1-0 6A) have completed the first half of their season and sit atop the MaxPreps 6A regional rankings. Corona del Sol (10-3, 0-1) will look to respond on its home field after narrowly letting the first matchup slip away late, setting the stage for another competitive showdown between two of Arizona’s top programs.

Brophy head coach Josh Garcia said the team is leaning on its “ace” arm, right-handed senior pitcher and Columbia University commit Ronan O’Brien, in a pivotal road matchup.

“Ronan’s our ace, you put your best guy on the road and try to sneak out a win,” Garcia said. “It’s gonna be another battle, but we love Ronan in that situation.”

The matchup marks O’Brien’s fifth start of the season, with opponents averaging just 1.5 runs in his four previous games.

Despite the dramatic comeback in the previous meeting, players acknowledge there is little room for error moving forward. Senior third baseman Isaac Holder emphasized the need for earlier offensive production.

“Hitters need to get it going; we can’t wait until the seventh (inning) again,” Holder said, referencing Tuesday’s walk-off win.

Early-game execution could be a key factor in the rematch, particularly against a Corona del Sol team expected to make adjustments. Establishing momentum at the plate and applying pressure in the first few innings may help the Broncos avoid relying on another late rally.

In addition to offensive adjustments, Brophy is monitoring the health of junior center fielder Chris Sinacori, who appeared to limp during his first at-bat while rounding first base. Garcia described the injury as a cramp, and said he would evaluate Sinacori further on Wednesday to determine his availability for Thursday’s game.

While the offense looks to find a more consistent rhythm, the Broncos continue to rely on their depth and preparation. Garcia noted that the pitching staff is in a strong position with the bullpen fully rested.

That depth will be important not only against Corona del Sol, but also as Brophy looks ahead to Friday’s matchup against the Desert Vista Thunder. Garcia added that Charlie Borchard is scheduled to start against the Thunder, signaling confidence in the team’s ability to manage its rotation during a busy stretch.

Beyond the on-field execution, players continue to point to the team’s chemistry as a defining factor in their success. O’Brien said the group’s connection has been evident throughout the season.

“Team culture is off the charts right now,” O’Brien said. “It’s all about contributing to the team everyday.”

As Brophy heads into the second half of its season, the focus remains on maintaining momentum while continuing to improve. A second straight matchup against the defending champions presents both a challenge and an opportunity that could further solidify the Broncos’ position among the state’s top teams.

The rematch is scheduled for 3:45 p.m. at Corona del Sol High School.
