PHOENIX – Brophy Prep won 3-2 in a one-of-a-kind game against Corona del Sol on Tuesday at Opus Field.
Coach Josh Garcia mentioned that during this game they used all of their roster except for the backup catchers.
With a rough start to the game, Chris Sinacori was the first batter getting onto second base, but he suffered a cramp and was substituted by Noah Stewart.
Since the first inning, the Broncos were having a hard time getting players on the plate. The first three innings, the Broncos had their players hitting the ball and getting out right away.
The fourth inning was when Broncos players started to draw walks, and walked to third base.
Garcia mentioned that they need to work on some things, and said the team has talked about it.
“We have to get some things figured out,” Garcia said. “But that’s what we’re working on right now.”
Garcia also mentioned that what they are struggling with is testing opposing infields.
“We can fly out with the best of them,” Garcia said. “We have to see if they have the ability to catch and play catch, and make decisions in tough situations.”
Garcia mentioned that the team was trying to get too big and they were trying to do a lot with their swings, since many players were struck out during the game.
When junior shortstop Dre Ethier went to bat all of the bases were loaded in the seventh. Ethier hit the ball to secure two runs, tying the game 2-2.
“We just had to put the ball in play,” Ethier said. “Baseball took over and we ended up beating a ball at first base.”
When Isaac Holder went to bat, his hit made another player score and that made the Brophy Broncos win the game 3-2.
Holder mentioned that they had worked on a few things this week that they have been struggling with and they felt very confident.
“They have a great lineup,” Holder said. “We kind of had some growing pains through what we’ve been working on today, but Grady pitched a heck of a game.”
Starting pitcher Grady Openden said that it felt very good to win and that he trusted his teammates to win the game.
“They are competitive, we are competitive,” Openden said. “Good lineup against good lineup, there will be good baseball.”
The Broncos will face Corona del Sol Aztecs in an away game on March 26. The Broncos expect another great game.
