THE LAIR INVITATIONAL

March 20-21: Sunnyside High School

Mica Mountain beat Marana 2-0 to capture the championship of the Lair Invitational hosted by Sunnyside on Friday and Saturday.

The Bolts beat Marana 25-17 in the first set but the second set was a battle from the beginning with the Tigers holding a three to five point lead for most of the set only to see the elad slip away. Sophomore setter Kase Caldwell hit fellow sophomore Timothy Jones to put Marana up 24-21 but the Bolts scored four straight points to go up 25-24.

Senior Blake Fye Freeland collected three of his 20 assists in the match during that run with two headed to senior Andrew Evans and another to senior Patrick Sapp. Junior Zackary Yager also recorded an improbable kill from the back row to help fuel the momentum change. Caldwell found senior Dillon Capa to tie the match back up 25-25 but the Tigers failed to return the ball twice in a row and Mica Mountain took the set 27-25.

Evans and Sapp had six kills each and junior Gabriel Munger added 5.

In the third place match, Flowing Wells beat Combs 2-0 (25-12, 25-21). Senior Luis Valdez finished with 19 assists for the Caballeros and junior Lincoln Maskey had 10 kills. Junior Erik Lopez had 11 assists for Combs and sophomore Angel Santos had six kills.

The Epic Tourneys Boys Volleyball Invite hosted Benjamin Franklin will be held on the ASU campus from March 27-28.
