Sahuaro standout Cisco Llamas needed 15 points to break into the 2,000 career-point club but the senior found things difficult early on with the Cougars battling Salpointe at home Friday night. The Lancers led 33-30 at the half and Llamas was limited to one point in the first quarter and 10 at the half. He picked up his 15th point in the third quarter but the Lancers came to play.

Salpointe led 61-59 with 3:51 left but the Lancers missed on six free throws in the fourth quarter to finish 7-18 at the line. That stat, combined with Llamas scoring 14 points down the stretch and Isaac Teasley making six three pointers, proved too difficult for the Lancers as the late lead faded away for the 69-62 setback.

Sahuaro is ranked No. 5 in the 4A Conference and No. 18 in the Open Division and Salpointe is No. 16 in the 4A Conference. Sahuaro still has two regular season games remaining and Salpointe has three. The Cougars can win the 4A Kino Region with a victory at No. 25 Mica Mountain on Tuesday. Salpointe plays at No. 47 Amphitheater Monday night.

Llamas finished with 30 points and Teasley added 23. Omar Rasul scored 24 for Salpointe and Cameron Hicks scored 13.
