The 2,913 career points scored by former Catalina Foothills standout Julie Brase Hairgrove from 1994-98 survived one major onslaught in 28 years but it might not survive the month of February if Pueblo senior America Cazares scores 196 points over the next six guaranteed games of her high school career.

Cazares has 2,718 career points with four regular season games remaining and at least two playoff games on the schedule under the new Open Division rules. That’s 33 points an outing. If she plays seven more games the number would be 28 and so on. Is that doable? Cazares is already averaging 33 points a game with five games over 40 points including a game with 62 points against Desert View and another with 64 points against Buena at home. Pueblo travels to Buena on Feb. 3.

Of course, No. 2 Pueblo (19-4) is playing for a higher team goal of a state championship but the intrigue will bring even more attention to the team from the south side of Tucson.

Hairgrove went on to play for the University of Arizona before coaching at Loyola Marymount and then 18 years as an assistant for Phoenix Mercury. Hairgrove also served briefly as an assistant at Catalina Foothills. Her 2,913 career points survived a scare in 2021 when former Sahuaro and UNLV standout Alyssa Brown graduated with 2,680 career points but there were no invitational tournaments in the COVID season of her senior year. Still, Brown would have to do what Cazares is attempting to do now – score a lot down the stretch.

Hairgrove and Brown also share some University of Arizona heritage with Hairgrove being the granddaughter of Lute Olson and Brown being the granddaughter of former Wildcat Gene Moore.
