PRESCOTT — It only took 3,291 days, but the streak is finally over.
Ending at 103 straight Grand Canyon region victories, Flagstaff finally fell to a region foe during a regular season contest.
Bella Abt scored 16 points, Lilly James hit two big buckets in the fourth quarter, including a monumental 3-pointer with 3:35 to play to give her team a one-point lead, and the Prescott girls basketball team held on for a 46-40 win over Flagstaff on Wednesday night.
It is the fifth straight win for the No. 2-ranked Badgers (16-3, 4-0 4A Grand Canyon), but their first victory against the Eagles since Feb. 19, 2016, a 43-21 win in Prescott.
Head coach Jami Johnson said her girls have been waiting a “whole year” for this one, referencing the 57-53 loss to the Eagles in the 4A state quarterfinals a season ago.
Flagstaff went on to win a championship, beating Eastmark 44-30.
“The girls have put in so much work to get this done. They have earned every bit of it,” Johnson said.

James, a junior guard, doubled her regular season average in points (6.2) with 12 on the night, including two big buckets in the fourth quarter to help the Badgers hold off a late surge from Flagstaff.
“I was open on the three, and I knew it was going in right when I released it. I saw it, I zoomed in with my eyes and saw the ball go into the hoop and I was like, ‘Let’s go!’ And my two, I just beat her off the drive and I’m like, ‘I’m going up.’ Oh wow,” said James, who was 6 years old the last time Prescott beat Flagstaff.
“It’s credit to them. They are a good program. We worked hard for this moment, and I knew this was going to be the squad to do it,” James said.
Johnson said James has shown “so much composure” this season.
“Her decision making is unreal right now,” Johnson said. “She is so smart, especially with her shooting. She has stepped it up, I’m so pleased.”
Prescott led 28-18 at halftime, only to surrender an 11-2 run capped by a pair of free throws from Lexi Neal with 4:56 to play in the third quarter, bringing Flagstaff within one, 30-29.
Aubrey Edgewater hit a big 3-pointer at the 1:10 mark of the third quarter to give Flagstaff their first lead of the night, 34-33, but Prescott would hold them off in the fourth quarter for the win.

In reflecting on the 103-game winning streak in regular season Grand Canyon region play, Flagstaff coach Tyrone Johnson joked that he’d like to start another winning streak, but credited all the players he’s coached over the past decade who made it happen in the first place.
“I think it’s a testament to the players we’ve had. They come in, they buy in, they work hard. We were able to have dominance for that period, and it gave other teams in the region motivation to really come at us. It’s only made our region stronger,” Johnson said.
Flagstaff last loss a regular season region game on Jan. 10, 2017, a 50-47 defeat at the hands of rival Coconino. The Eagles won three region tournament games in 2017, and a handful of state playoff games against Grand Canyon teams since the streak began, which are not counted as region contests during the 103-game win streak.
He continued, “Now, Prescott being a top tier team, Mingus is right there … then Lee Williams and everyone else in the Top 16 or so. I think having that target on our back made people work harder in region, so it’s a beautiful thing to come out and compete in this region.”
No. 5-ranked Flagstaff (12-4, 3-1 4A Grand Canyon) hit seven 3-pointers, including two from Nidaya Nez, and two from Edgewater. The Eagles shot only four free throws on the evening (3-4), while Prescott was 9 of 16 from the charity stripe.
“Prescott is a solid team; we knew that from the start. They showed they are the better team. They came out with energy right from the start and jumped on us early,” Tyrone Johnson said. “We got in foul trouble early because they were aggressive in attacking us and in the third quarter we made a push, but it wasn’t enough. Prescott has been wanting this moment for a while, so congratulations to them.”
