Valley (Sanders) beats Wickenburg 73-41 to win Yvonne Johnson tourney title

CAMP VERDE — Alayna Begaye scored 25 points on four 3-pointers, Trinity Mitchell added 19 points and Valley (Sanders) finished the 28th annual Yvonne Johnson Memorial Shootout with a perfect 4-0 record to claim the title with a 73-41 win over Wickenburg on Tuesday night.

It is the fourth straight victory for the Pirates (11-5, 1-0 2A North), which jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.

Begaye was 5 for 10 from the charity stripe, while three of five 3-pointers for Mitchell came in a fourth quarter that saw Valley (Sanders) outscore the Wranglers 15-8.

"This is definitely a confidence booster for us, and it will help us in the long run with our our regular season games," Mitchell said about the tournament win. "It's important to play to our potential."

Mallory Murphy scored 22 points to lead the Wranglers (12-1, 1-0 2A West), which suffered their first loss of the season.
