Working with a defender in the goal, Tucson defeated Walden Grove 2-1 on Saturday to win the TUSD Ismael Arce Memorial Cup held at Tucson High School this past week. The Badgers went 4-0 including a 2-2 win over Tanque Verde Saturday morning that went to Pks with the Badgers prevailing 4-2.

Nevaeh Yanez came up with six saves including four one-on-one situations when the Red Wolves made a strong push down 1-0 almost midway through the second half. Sophomore Alexandria Nunez scored from about 15 yards out on the right side in the seventh minute to put Tucson up 1-0 and that held up until fellow sophomore Jessica Alvizar scored from the same location at the other end of the field in the 63rd minute.

Walden Grove sophomore Makenzie Massey cut the lead down to 2-1 in the 72nd but the Badgers held on for the win. Both teams took 10 shots in the match.

Walden Grove (6-3-1) travels to Pusch Ridge (1-5) on Jan. 5 and Tucson (5-4-1) will host Salpointe (3-3) on Jan. 7.

Tucson High defeated Cienega 3-1 to win the boy’s trophy late Saturday night. The Badgers went 3-0-1 over the week.
