6A FLAG FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP AT CORONA DEL SOL

No. 3 Hamilton (20-0) vs. No. 4 Red Mountain (19-1), 7 p.m.

The 35-14 final may not look like the No. 3 Hamilton Huskies were tested at No. 2 Marana Wednesday night but the game was in doubt until an interception from Moriah Green deep in Marana territory set up an 80-yard scoring drive to put her team up 14-7 at the break. Then, a blocked punt, a turnover on downs and another interception gave the Huskies short fields in the second half and the Tigers were unable to respond.

Marana ended the year with a very respectable 17-1 record behind the throwing arm of freshman Isabella Garcia and a crew of standout senior athletes including Malaysia Roebuck, Roxi Singer and Sadie Brown. Fellow freshman Sophia Silverstein and sophomores Mazie Brown and Brooklyn Griffin will figure big next season.

Hamilton returns to the 6A championship game where the Huskies beat Red Mountain 21-17 last year. The two teams will meet again this year after No. 4 Red Mountain upset No. 1 Highland 28-24 in the other semifinal game played Wednesday night. Highland finished 18-2 and Red Mountain is 19-1 heading into the final slated for Corona del Sol High School on Saturday with the first snap coming at 7 p.m.

Marlie Phillips, a sophomore, ended the night with 253 yards passing with three touchdowns and she also caught a TD pass from junior Markiah Riley on a trick play to put the Huskies up 35-7 in the fourth quarter. Riley had 62 yards receiving with a TD, freshman Athena Vasquez had 97 yards receiving with a TD, and Samaya Taylor-Jenkins had 61 yards receiving with TD plus two interceptions. Green had 39 yards receiving plus the interception.

For Marana, Garcia 245 yards passing incuding a 55-yard touchdown pass to Roebuck. Roebuck finished with 87 yards receiving and Sadie Brown had 118 yards receiving on nine catches. Garcia ran for a TD. Garcia was promoted a grade and she is young enough to be an eighth grader, which makes her success this year even more remarkable.
