Quick hits from Week 2 E. Valley, Southern Arizona football

The best of what came out of Week 2 of the 2012 football season is how it set up marquee-matchups for Week 3.
Three pairings for Week 3 in Division I feature many of the usual title contenders. The Ahwatukee Bowl winner between Mountain Pointe (2-0) at Desert Vista (2-0) could arguably lay claim to being the top team in D-I after three weeks. Red Mountain (2-0) and Brophy (2-1) have lived up to preseason accolades. They collide at Phoenix College on Friday night (Sept. 7). Then there's Desert Ridge (2-0) visiting Highland (2-0). Desert Ridge has been a title contender for several seasons. Highland has carried over a late surge last season to a solid start this season.
Down Tucson way Salpointe (2-1) and Ironwood Ridge (2-0) are on their way to making a fight for the Division II championship, which seems wide open with Chaparral dropping two tough games out of the chute. Don't count Chaparral out and make sure Marcos de Niza (2-0) is in the discussion of D-II elite with its last-second triumph over Chaparral last week.
Division III''s surprise squad is Tempe High, which won its second straight thriller by edging Poston Butte last week, 28-27. The Buffaloes are 2-0 and have surpassed last season's win total. They get defending champion Saguaro (1-1) this week. Saguaro escaped Thunderbird last week in a shootout and has looked little like the dominant squads of D-III or 4A-I of recent years.
A good interdivision contest pits D-III Queen Creek (2-0) at D-II Perry (2-0). Both schools have blitzed a pair of inferior opponents. Perry seeks revenge for a 27-21 loss last year. The schools aren't that far apart and have head coaches who played at rival schools a couple years apart in the early 1990s -- Perry coach Preston Jones (Red Mountain) and Queen Creek coach Joe Germaine (Mesa Mountain View).
