Desert View beat Mountain View 54-26 Friday night to move to 4-0 for the fifth time in program history and current head coach Robert Bonillas has three of those beginning in 2016 including a 6-0 start that year and a 5-0 start in 2021. The 2021 squad went on to win only the second playoff game in school history and the team finished with a 10-2 record. That’s the gold standard the Jaguars are shooting for, especially coming off of back-to-back 3-7 seasons over the last two years.

Sophomore running back Jaylee Abraham picked up 222 yards rushing at Mountain View giving him 563 yards on the year with 12 touchdowns at almost 11 yards a pop. He put the Jaguars up 7-0 on a run up the middle with 6:44 left in the first and the team never looked back.

Mountain View dropped to 2-2 on the year after starting out with a couple of impressive wins. The Mountain Lions have given up 96 points over the last two weeks and the team brings in Cienega (2-2) next week with the Bobcats scoring 56 points against Nogales Friday night. Still, Mountain View was able to score 26 points on Desert View which gives the team something to build on down the stretch.

Abraham had his 22 yards and four TDs but the Jaguars also threw for over 300 yards with senior Ryan Vasavilbaso (200) and sophomore Andrew Godoy (115) splitting time. Fernando Soto had 88 yards receiving on six catches and Anthony Rodarte had 84 on four touches.

Desert View will host Maricopa (2-2) next Friday in another battle in the 5A Southern Region, a region that grew stronger Friday night thanks to Flowing Wells going 4-0 and Sunnyside beating defending 4A state champion Mica Mountain 14-10. The initial set of power ranking will be released on Oct. 14 and the top 24 teams at the 5A level will make the playoffs in some form.
