Pusch Ridge held on to beat Phoenix Country Day 603 to 604 to win the Division III state championship that was held at the Aguila Golf Course on Monday and Tuesday. Valley Christian took third place with a score of 605, making this one of the most competitive matches in state history.
The finish for the individual medalist was also close with Pusch Ridge sophomore collecting birdies on the 14th and 15th holes to draw even with Phoenix Country Day freshman Sam Meltzer near the end the final round but a bogie from Stypa on the 17th, combined with a birdie from Metzer on the same hole, provided the cushion Meltzer needed for his 5-under-par 139 victory over Stypa (141). Gilbert Christian junior Callaway Conkright took third place with a 1-under 143.
This was the first state championship for the Lions, Valley Christian won the state championship last year and Phoenix Country day took fifth. Melter’s sister, Eliza Meltzer took 23rd last year but she tied for eighth place this spring, making her the top female golfer in the field.
