In a matchup between top-10 Class 6A state-ranked teams, Hamilton High School hosted Liberty High School.
The first inning ended scoreless, but Hamilton's offense came alive in the bottom of the second to help jumpstart a 8-3 victory Wednesday.
“It was a team effort during the game, and my teammates were getting into their groove hitting, which helped us earn runs,” Hamilton senior catcher Simon Fernandez said.
Senior infielder Boston Kellner got the ball rolling for Hamilton by earning the team's first RBI.
Kellner hit a fly ball deep to left field, allowing Fernandez to score from second base. Fernandez didn’t slow down and neither did his offense after that at bat.
The Huskies added four more runs before the end of the second, jumping out to a 5-0 lead.
But Liberty (12-2) didn’t waver despite giving up the early runs. In the top of the third inning, junior catcher Ervey Quijada and junior shortstop Abram Sherrin each recorded RBIs, helping the Lions cut the deficit.
Hamilton responded with another run before the end of the inning, as Nico Linville hit a ball up the middle, bringing Fernandez home once again.
“Nico had a great hit during the third, which gave me the opportunity to score and build up our lead,” Fernandez said.
Liberty continued to fight in the top of the fourth inning, scoring the only run of the inning to make it 6-3.
But Hamilton’s defense tightened up, causing problems for the Lions’ offense. A memorable moment came in the fifth inning when Hamilton's Corey Wittke made a diving catch in deep right field.
“Everyone contributed to this win on both sides of the ball. The offense continued to earn runs, and the defense shut out the last two innings,” Fernandez said.
The Huskies’ offense added two more runs in the final two innings before picking up the key victory.
Hamilton (12-3) held Liberty to just three hits.
