Dezmen Roebuck, Samaya Taylor-Jenkins and Katelyn Jewell earn Ed Doherty recognitions

Marana standout Dezmen Roebuck hit the trifecta this past week with an Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year recognition on Friday, Dec. 6, a MaxPreps Arizona High School Football Player of the Year recognition on Tuesday and an Ed Doherty Award on Saturday afternoon at the Chateau Luxe located in north Phoenix. The Ed Doherty Award recognizes the best high school football player in the state of Arizona.
Roebuck (6-foot, 190) collected 95 receptions for 1,131 yards and 14 touchdowns to go along with 51 tackles and four interceptions on defense. He helped lead the Tigers to a top seed in the Open Division while setting state records in career receptions (352). The Washington commit finished his career with 4,239 receiving yards, which ranks second in state history. He also set a single season reception mark of 121 last year for another state record.
The other finalists included tight end/defensive end Jimmy Leon of Mica Mountain, Pinnacle quarterback Wyatt Horton, McClintock quarterback Jaxon Knutson and Queen Creek quarterback Tait Reynolds.

In addition, Hamilton receiver and safety Samaya Taylor-Jenkins and Canyon View quarterback and safety Katelyn Jewell shared Flag Football Ed Doherty honors to become the first ever recognized for the sport.
Taylor-Jenkins was named Offensive Player of the Year by the Arizona Cardinals after she helped lead the Huskies to a 6A state championship and Jewell led the Jaguars to a 5A state championship. The other Flag finalists included Madison Coger of Campo Verde, Malaysia Roebuck of Marana and Marlie Phillips of Hamilton.
Longtime Tucson and Phoenix sportscaster Kevin McCabe was honored with the “Contributor of the Game” award and the “AIA Referee of the Year Award” went to Scott Williams.
Over 175 athletes were honored this year with weekly awards from tackle and flag.
