A near sweep of his four events at the Arizona Division I state track and field meet this spring resulted in another big win for Brophy College Prep (Phoenix) standout Devon Allen.
On Thursday, Allen was selected the state's top boys track and field athlete of the year by Gatorade. As a winner of the state award, Allen is eligible for national honors.
Allen, a junior, won both the 110- and 300-meter hurdles at state, while finishing second in the 100 and 200 sprints. Brophy Prep also finished second in the team race.
Earlier in the season at the prestigious Arcadia Invitational, Allen set state records in both hurdle events – 13.53 in the 110s and 36.39 in the 300s.
"When you look at Devon's performance, it is clear that he is very talented," Brophy Prep coach Bill Kalkman said in a release announcing the award. "Devon loves to compete, and he is not satisfied with his marks so far. He is pressing on with a training regimen to race faster in national competition this summer."
