Eight schools figuring to be among the elite in Division I this coming season hit the hardwood Friday June 22 and Saturday June 23 at the 2nd annual Mesa Summer PrimeTime boys basketball tournament at Red Mountain High School.

Teams competing are, in seeded order: Pinnacle, Corona del Sol, Mesa High, Brophy, Mesa Mountain View, Mountain Pointe, Desert Vista and Basha. With a few players tending to other summer commitments, some teams won't  be at full strength, but  fans can get an idea of who teams and players are to watch for 2012-2013.

Players to watch include Corona del Sol guard Casey Benson, preparing for his third varsity season for the defending D-I champs; Pinnacle's Dorian Pickens and Drew Bender, who have led the Pioneers for a couple campaigns; Mountain View center Payton Dastrup, and Mountain Pointe guard Khari Holloway.

Play opens with exhibition contests on Friday. The 5 p.m. games are Mesa vs. Mountain View and Brophy vs. Mountain Pointe. The 6 p.m. games feature Pinnacle and Desert Vista and Basha vs. Corona del Sol.

Bracket (first-round play) also begins  Friday at 7 p.m. with No. 4 Brophy vs. No. 5 Mountain View and No. 6 Mountain Pointe vs. No. 3 Mesa and then at 8 p.m. with No. 8 Basha vs. No. 1 Pinnacle and No. 7 Desert Vista vs. No. 2 Corona del Sol. Winners bracket semis follow at 11 a.m. on Saturday with the championship game set for 1 p.m.
