PRESCOTT VALLEY — Garison Jones recorded four RBIs, Vinny Magdaleno scored four times and No. 6-ranked Bradshaw Mountain collected 14 hits offensively in a 14-4 win over Coconino on Thursday afternoon.

It is the fourth straight win for the Bears (10-6, 3-0 4A Grand Canyon), which used a four-run rally in the first inning and scored in every other inning accept the second to secure the victory.

Jones was 2 for 2 with a home run and a triple, while Magdaleno was 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI. Shane Lievsay was 2 for 3 with a double, a triple and three RBIs, while T.J. Drape had two hits and two RBIs.

Lievsay toed the mound for the Bears, striking out six in six innings of work while allowing only two earned runs on six hits to earn the win.

For Coconino (8-7, 0-3 4A Grand Canyon), only Connor Culwell and Corbin Derr had extra base hits, while Culwell surrendered six earned runs in 2-1/3 innings on the mound.

INJURY BUG

Thursday’s contest is the first peak for Bears fans at what this Bradshaw Mountain club could potentially look like at full strength this spring, coach Brian Bundrick said.

“Today is going to be the first day we’ve had what we consider eight of our nine normal starters,” Bundrick said during pregame warmup Thursday against Coconino. “We’ve had some injuries.”

At least three starters have been out with various injuries, and with other players playing out of position to fill those holes, it’s been a rough go so far.

“So far we’ve survived most of it,” Bundrick said.

GRAND CANYON REGION

With four teams ranked in the Top 12 as of Friday morning, March 29, the Grand Canyon is shaking out to be one of the toughest regions in 4A this season.

“There’s no doubt, the Grand Canyon is normally the toughest, or second toughest, region in the state. We don’t always have the best team in 4A, but we always have a few [in the top],” Bundrick said. “Every day is a battle out here; you don’t get days off once you go to region play.”

Flagstaff is currently No. 4, Bradshaw Mountain is No. 6, Prescott is No. 11 and Mingus rounds out at No. 12. Coconino sits just outside the Top 25 at No. 28.

Magdaleno believes the Bears can excel this season despite the tough region schedule.

“Right now, we have a lot of momentum rolling in. We’re all bonding right now, and we’re playing together well,” Magdaleno said.

Lievsay, a senior, thinks Bradshaw Mountain is a great program and he’s proud to be part of it.

“As a team, we’re good. I think we’re going to go all the way, at least to Tempe Diablo like last year,” Lievsay said.

The Bears made the 4A state semifinals last spring as a No. 8 seed, but fell to eventual state champ Canyon Del Oro 6-5.

“There’s been a lot of adversity in our defense, because of injuries, but we’re learning ourselves and who works where, and we’re definitely coming together,” Lievsay said.

Coconino is set to host Thunderbird at 4 p.m. Friday, March 29.
