Canyon del Oro (Tucson) has a good thing going.
For the second consecutive season, and the fifth time in the past six years, the state's best player donned a Dorados uniform.
After leading Canyon Del Oro to the Division II state title, pitcher/outfielder Kayla Bonstrom was selected the Arizona softball player of the year by Gatorade. Canyon Del Oro's Mattie Fowler was honored last season, after Kenzie Fowler won the award from 2007-09.
"Kayla was the difference on both sides of the ball for Canyon Del Oro," Ironwood Ridge coach Randy Anway said.
In the circle, Bonstrom went 17-3 with a 3.12 ERA and 128 strikeouts in 130 innings. She was even more potent at the plate, batting .603 with 16 homers and 63 RBI. She also scored 71 runs and boasted a 1.293 slugging percentage.
In her career, which included three state championships in her four years, she finished with a batting average of .535 with 34 homers.
Bonstrom, who also boasts a 4.35 weighted grade-point average, has a softball scholarship to Stanford. She is eligible for Gatorade's national player of the year, which will be announced later this month.
