There was no area lacking for the North in Sunday afternoon's clash with the South in the Division II Arizona Baseball Coaches Association all-star game at Suprise Stadium.
At least not for the first five innings. Then things got dicey for a frame. But the North shrugged off a six-run outburst by the South in the sixth inning and went on to post a 10-6 win.
Seven players had RBI's for the North, which outhit the South 17-11. With all the contributors it was hard to single out a most valuable player, but ultimately it went to North starting pitcher Kelvan Pilot of Notre Dame.
Pilot worked the first two innings and was the winning pitcher. He allowed one hit, no runs and struck out three.
Sunnyslope coach Jeff Shillington, who guided the Vikings to the Division II state title last month, was proud of the effort and production he witnessed.
"Coaching in an all-star game you don't know what to expect not getting to practice," Shillington said. "There was a lot of talent out there with teams that were alive in the double elimination part of the (state) tournament. You just hope they come out and play to their ability, and I think they did."
Pilot also had help from his mound mates. Four other pitchers worked a scoreless inning or more. That list included Raymond Kellis' Blake Gidney, Bradshaw Mountain's Kaycee Jones, Arcadia's Andrew Naderer and Liberty's Nathan Bannister.
The North scored in six of the nine innings and built an 8-0 lead after five innings. They got two RBIs from Notre Dame's Daniel Ziemann and Flagstaff's Dakota Cornelius. Adding an RBI apiece were Saguaro's Zach Gibbons, Arcadia's Caleb McKinnon (an inside the park home run), Cactus Shadows Eduardo Castro, Verrado's Gian Mendoza and Cactus Shadows Sean O'Grady. Four North players collected two hits -- Liberty's Paul Panaccione, Sunrise Mountain's Nick White, Apollo's Javier Corona and Castro.
The South was led by Flowing Wells Luis Robles with two hits. Their big hit was a two-run triple by Sahuaro's Devon Carrillo. The defensive play of the game came in the eighth when the North's Cedric Rodriguez threw out Casa Grande's Danny Vicari at home to snuff out a rally that could have cut into their 9-6 lead.
