Somebody have to sub in an all-star game and  that role isn't customary to any members of such a team.

But Florence's Logan Porter had no problem adapting Saturday night, delivering a pair of key hits and a walk as the South held off the North, 11-10, in the Arizona Baseball Coaches Association Division III all-star contest at  Surprise Stadium.

"It wasn't a problem," Porter said of waiting his turn to get some action in his final prep game. "It's a great experience playing with all the kids from the South. I went out and had fun."

Porter, who is headed to play baseball and go to school at Mesa Community College in the fall, was named the game's most valuable player. Porter got  his first at-bat in the sixth with the South leading, 5-4. He led off the top of that innng with a triple and came around to score on a ground out by Valley Christian's Garrison Leach.

The North rallied back with a run in its half of the sixth and two in the seventh to take a 7-6 lead heading to the eighth. Porter sparked things for the South again twide after that.

Porter drew a leadoff walk, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He alertly scored on a strikeout that the North needed to notch the out at first with the catcher's throw to first. That run tied the game for the final time at 7.

"I learned playing for my coach at Florence you have to play hard all the time," Porter said. "You have to stay focused, keep working and be scrappy."

Scrappy is what  both teams were all night. In the end the South was a little more, especially considering they overcome seven errors to win.

With the game  tied at 7 in the top of the ninth, the South produced a four-run rally. North Pointe's Alan Garcia broke the deadlock with an RBI single and Bisbee's Anthony Rivera followed with another scoring single. Porter capped the rally with what proved to be the game-deciding run(s) with a two-run single to left.

The North gave the South a scare in the last  of the ninth scoring three runs on two hits, an error and two walks. But Coolidge's Trevor Fink got Window Rock's Taylor Davis to fly out to left with the winning runs on base.

Safford's Derek Umphries picked up the win with two innings of work. River Valley's Dyllan Blossom suffered the loss.

The South got off to a slow start offensively thanks to the pitching of River Valley ace Josh Advocate. Advocate worked the first three innings allowing an unearned run, two hits and he fanned six. Advocate scored three runs, drove in a run and started the North's ninth-inning rally that fell short with a walk.

The South had three other players collect two hits -- Willcox's Anthony Torres, Empire's Robby Craig and Bisbee's David Contreras. Contreras also had two RBI.

Winslow's Caleb Layden and Snowflake's Tanner Yellowhair had two hits each to lead the North. Mingus' Evan McFarland had two RBIs on his lone at-bat of the game in the first inning.
