Mike Johnson, one of the longest tenured baseball coaches in the state, has stepped down  from his most recent stop at Skyline High.

Johnson, who has coached the last 31 years (28 at the high school level) at Duncan, Queen Creek, Chandler and Skyline high schools, officially resigned on Wednesday.

"I want to take a year off so I can get a chance to see my son (Darian) play in Beaumont, Texas at Lamar," Johnson said. "It will give me a chance to step back, see and do some other things."

Johnson has posted a career record of 426-344 in his prep head coaching career, which includes a state title at Queen Creek in 1989 and runner-up at Queen Creek in 1991. His tenure at Skyline began in 2006-2007. He coached at Queen Creek from 1985-1992 and at Chandler High from 1993-2006. Seventeen of Johnson's 28 teams at those stops have qualified for the state tournament.

Skyline made the playoffs once under Johnson in 2009 and its best record was in 2010 (16-11). The Coyotes were 9-18 this past season.
