Phoenix Country Day gets by Tonopah Valley in a sweep

Phoenix Country Day’s girls’ volleyball team defeated Tonopah Valley High 25-14, 25-14, 25-19 on Thursday.
Phoenix Country Day, 15-2, played well throughout, like it has most of the season, given its record. Phoenix Country Day remains undefeated at home, 9-0 and is 2-0 in the Metro Conference.
Phoenix Country Day defeated Tonopah Valley despite seeing one of it star players Quincy Roden going down with a slight injury in the third game.
Although Roden’s fall made it a bit difficult to finish off Tonopah, Phoenix Country Day eventually got the sweep.
PCDS started off slow in the opening game. Trailing 5-0, PCDS got its first point off a Roden spike. The Eagles then settled in.
“Anything helps … it's always hard starting off down 5-0 especially before they break, pretty much anything to get everyone going,” said Roden. “We thrive off of energy,”
The first game ended with a nice offensive performance from Roden and teammate Mia Warner.
It still took some time in the second game as the Eagles started off slow with Roden sparking the team once again. Warner and Roden were again the leaders with multiple kills en route to the win.
“We tend to start out a little bit slow,” said Coach Kat Glaeseman. “We're always kind of figuring out another team at the beginning.”
Warner took control in the third game, starting with a sensational spike. But later in the match, Roden dove for a ball and suffered an injury. She did not return to the match.
Roden said it allowed the team to fill in and work together, see other people step up.
“It was also a big game, so we all wanted to see what we could do,” she said, “kinda switch things up a little bit.”
After the fall, Phoenix proved that just because one of the best players on the team is out for the rest of the match, they can win.
It all came down to teamwork, something that has served the team well as it continues to roll this season.
The Eagles have won eight consecutive matches.
“I don't personally [do anything specific to help the girls with teamwork],” Glaesman said. “The girls, especially the captains, really take it upon themselves and plan activities and sleepovers for team bonding.”
It seems to be working with the Eagles’ record reflecting it.
Notable
Roden committed to Claremont McKenna College when she was just a sophomore.
