How easy do No. 1 seed Basha and No. 2 seed Red Mountain have it Tuesday (May 1) when they begin their bids for the 2012 Division I softball title? Not as easy as one might think.
Basha, winner of its last 12 games, takes on No. 16 Perry. Perry isn't far behind last year's big-school runner-up in terms of being hot. Perry has won 10 games in a row, including a first-round shutout of Corona del Sol. The teams met twice during the regular season and Basha prevailed in both, 3-0 and 5-2.
Defending big-school champ Red Mountain has the longest success streak going with at 14 games. Its last loss was to Paradise Valley on March 24 in the Desert Mountain Invitational. Red Mountain hosts rival Mesa Mountain View, the No. 15 seed. Mountain View has won six games in a row, the last three via shutout. Mountain View has played Red Mountain three times this season, losing two (4-1, 5-0) and winning one (2-1).
Those aren't the only lengthy winning streaks intact heading to Tuesday'second round in D-I. No. 7 Cibola (nine wins in a row) faces No. 10 Buena (seven). N0. 6 Horizon (seven) entertains No. 22 Tucson High.
Whether its a 14- 12- 9-, 7- or 6-game winning streak that ends come late afternoon Tuesday, it will be a good streak that's halted. And unfortunately for those who falter. a season that's over as well.
