D-I baseball second round hard-pressed to match first round

Tuesday's second round of the Division I state baseball tournament has its work come out for it. In terms of close, competitive games hard to imagine it can duplicate what took place in round one.
The first round played last Saturday (April 28) featured eight elimination games in the new format (elimination for the loser in rounds one and two). Six of the games were decided by one run. Another by two runs. The other was a 3-0 final. Not a lot of runs were scored with two 7-6 games the highest scoring.
The added anxiety of sudden-death games in the first two rounds serves to add spice and excitement. For those keeping track, the bracket played out with the better seeds winning six of the eight games. Teams that beat higher seeds were No. 24 Corona del Sol over No. 9 Tucson (took a 5-run seventh by the Aztecs to win, 7-6) and No. 20 Desert Vista topping No. 13 Boulder Creek.
