It was a bright, sun-soaked  Monday and that bright sun was shining on Desert Vista's baseball team. And perhaps its postseason aspirations.

Desert Vista used a two-out, sun-aided double to cap its second rally in as many innings and post a 6-5 victory over  Brophy in a Division I game at Desert Vista HS.

Don't take that to mean it was a lucky win for Desert Vista. To the contrary.

"They made the plays, we didn't," Brophy coach Tom Succow said. "They're fighting their rear-ends off to make the playoffs and they played like it. They ended the game with a 3-6-1 double play. That's a tough play for high school teams to turn and turn it the way they did."

Desert Vista evened its overall record at 12-12 and improved its power-point record to 9-5. The Thunder started the day 24th in the power-point rankings in Division I -- the last spot available for the 24-team state tournament that begins in less than two weeks.

Desert Vista fell behind for the second time in as many innnings, 5-4,  in the top of the sixth. Brophy's David Graybill singled up the middle to give the Broncos the lead.

But as Desert Vista had done the inning before, it plated two runs in its half of the sixth to regain the lead. A sacrifice fly by Zach Steigerwald tied the game at 5. At the end of the play, Desert Vista had a runner thrown out at third trying to advance on the fly. That left the Thunder with a runner on first and two outs.

Austin Hicks then lifted a high fly to right (the sun field in late afternoon at Desert Vista). Brophy's Ryan Castellani had trouble picking it up and it ultimately dropped for an RBI, game-winning double.

"We've gotten better each week as the season has gone on," Desert Vista coach Stan Luketich said. "This is the most unselfish  group I've coached in years. They're more concerned with what the team does than what individuals do."

Desert Vista starter Luke Leftwich was in line to go the distance, but an error and walk in the seventh gave Brophy runners at first and second with one out. Luketich went to closer Tyler Adams, who needed two pitches to induce the game-ending double play he put the finishing touches on by covering first.

"Tyler had more chances to close last year than he has this year," Luketich said. "He likes pressure, and that's why we like him."

The lead changed hands several times, particularly in the see-saw fifth and sixth. Desert Vista used RBI singles in the first by A.J. Valencia and in the fourth by Drew Cutchall to lead 2-0.

Leftwich got roughed up a bit in the fifth when the offenses perked up. With two outs and a runner on, Brophy's Chris Beall lauched an opposite field fly to left-center that had just enough to fall over the fence for a homer. After hitting Nick Jewett with a pitch after Beall's HR, Jeff Clasen matched Beall with an opposite-field homer to left to put the Broncos up, 4-2.

"I thought at that point we had it going," Succow said. "But they came right back. A couple times. We had an opportunity to win today. Didn't take advantage."

Desert Vista evened the score in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI ground out by Tyler Viza and an RBI single by Adams. Adams was the only Desert Vista player with two hits. Graybill, Clasen and Castellani had two hits each for Brophy.
