Basha's Zach Cunningham parachuted a two-run single to short left field with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning Monday night to give the Bears a 7-6 victory over Red Mountain in the second round of the Mesquite-Gilbert Invitational at Gilbert High.
Cunningham looped the game-winner between the left fielder, third baseman and shortstop to cap a three-run Basha rally. The hit made a winner of Basha's Jesus Daal, who finished the game with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Red Mountain, which trailed 4-1 after the first inning, had rallied with five runs in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead which it took to the last of the seventh.
A walk, a hit batter and a pinch-hit double by Ivan Sanchez cut Red Mountain's lead to 6-5. Reliever Aaron Smith was one out away from closing the game after getting a bases-loaded fielder's choice. Cunningham, a left-handed hitter, followed with the well-placed winner.
Red Mountain starter Matthias Ruckle, who nearly was removed from the game in the first after allowing four runs and six hits without retiring a batter, settled in to pitch five innings and left with the chance to win the game. Ruckle allowed only three hits after the first inning.
Jamie Westbrook had three hits to lead Basha. Cunningham and Drew Shasteen added two apiece and Ronnie Querry hit a two-run homer in the first for the Bears. Tarran Beasley had two hits for Red Mountain and Biilly Freeman homered to start the Mountain Lions five-run, fifth inning.
Desert Vista won its second game of the tourney with a 6-5 win over Skyline. Mesquite did likewise, blanking Independence, 20-0, and Gilbert is 2-0 after topping McClintock, 7-4. Desert Vista and Gilbert meet Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Gilbert. Basha takes on Westview and Mesquite plays Skyline. Both games are at Mesquite High on Tuesday at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
