Seton Catholic's baseball team appeared on the verge Friday afternoon of avenging a 16-5 loss earlier this week to 4A Desert Sky Region rival Mesquite.

The Sentinels (13-5 overall, 0-2 region) took a 6-2 lead to the bottom of the sixth only to surrender four runs in the bottom of the frame. The contest eventually advanced to the eighth inning even at 6-6. Seton was an out away from going to the ninth. But a wild pitch on the first pitch to leadoff hitter Thomas Vogiatzis brought that notion to a halt as Wyatt Wright scampered home with the winning run and 7-6 triumph for the host Wildcats.

Wright, who finished 2 for 3 including a leadoff triple to center to set up the game-winner, also singled helping along a two-out, four-run rally in the sixth. It made a winner of reliever Jacob Espinoza, who tossed a scoreless eighth inning despite allowing a leadoff double.

It was a huge day for Seton catcher Jacob Brown, although the loss had to take some of the pleasure away of a two home-run, six RBI effort. Brown laced a line-drive three-run homer in the first inning to stake the Sentinels to a 3-0 lead and tacked on a three-run clout to right field in the top of the sixth to open up their 6-2 advantage.

Seton's Tommy Steinkamp took over in the sixth for starter Charles Heil, who limited Mesquite (13-8-1, 3-1) to three hits and two runs in five innings. Steinkamp recorded the first two outs in the sixth, but the inning got away from him with four straight singles and an outfield error as the Wildcats tied the game and forced extra innings. Steinkamp yielded Wright's leadoff triple in the eighth, then fanned the next two hitters swinging before a pitch in the dirt scored Wright.

Keeton Bell led Mesquite Mesquite at the plate going 3 for 4. TeammateTariq Freeny delivered a pair of RBI with two sacrifice flies. Three Seton players besides Brown collected multiple hits - Josh Hamrick (2 for 3), Michael Williamson (2 for 4) and Gerard Gerken (2 for 4).

Mesquite and Seton continue region play in their next games on Tuesday. Mesquite hosts ALA Queen Creek and Seton travels to Marcos de Niza.
