Westwood High just finished hiring a new football coach a couple weeks ago and now turns attention to searching for a boys basketball coach after Paul Wilson submitted his resignation last week.
Wilson coached Westwood the past six seasons after relocating to Arizona from San Diego prior to the start of the 2006-2007 season. Wilson's record in his tenure at Westwood was 66-101. Prior to coming to Arizona he coached 10 seasons at La Jolla Country Day, where his teams were perennial playoff contenders and won two CIF championships. Overall, Wilson has coached at the high school and college level for 25 years.
"Paul did all you could ask of a coach in terms of coaching, camps, time and commitment," Mesa district athletic director Steve Hogen said." We'd have loved to have him continue. This was his decision."
Westwood was 14-14 in the recently completed season, the second-best record in Wilson's six seasons at the helm. Westwood's best season under Wilson came in 2007-08 (16-13). Wilson will continue teaching math at Westwood, but the program will miss his positive influence with his players and the sport.
"I've had tremendous support at Westwood," Wilson said. "The increased responsibility of teaching the last three or four years makes it hard. You want to go home at night and feel you've done well at something. It's harder to do that now teaching and coaching."
