Corona del Sol handles Cesar Chavez for boys D-I crown

When a team is going after a state championship it wants to put its best effort forward. Corona del Sol's boys basketball team did just that Saturday night to erase disappointment of a year ago.
Guards Casey Benson and Calaen Robinson kick started the offense in the first quarter and forward Avery Moss controlled the inside in every facet Saturday night as the Aztecs knocked off Cesar Chavez, 66-53, to win the Division I title at Jobing.com Arena.
While the influence of Sammy Duane Sr., the longtime Corona del Sol coach from the late 1970's through the mid-1990s and now son, Sammy Duane Jr., has been huge for the program, Duane Jr. wanted to make sure the main focus of the team's 2011-2012 triumph rested with his players.
"Thisis not about me or my dad, it's about those guys other there," Duane Jr. said pointing to his team doing television interviews. "They've been a on a mission every since they lost last year (quarterfinals to Mesa Mtn. View)."
Corona del Soll won its 30th game in a row Saturday to improve to 32-1 for the year. It's Corona's first boys basketball title since Duane Sr. was coach in 1994 and the Aztecs defeated Carl Hayden. Duane Jr. coached in the title game in 2006 against Mountain View, but came up short. Overall it's Corona's fifth boys hoops crown. Chavez, despite the loss, finished runner-up for the second time in three years with a final record of 27-6.
Starting Corona off to victory in this one was Benson and Robinson. They scored five points apiece in the first period to pace the Aztecs to a 16-11 lead. Moss was already gathering in a bunch of rebounds and had one putback to his credit in the opening period. For the game that trio posted lofty numbers
Benson finished with a team-high 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field. Three of his field goals were three pointers. Robinson had 14 points and dished out six assists. The player that stood out most, however, was Moss.
The 6-foot-4 senior bound for Nebraska on a football scholarship, had 18 points and 21 rebounds. Four blocked shots completed his evening in the lane.
"This was Moss's game tonight," Cesar Chavez coach Gary Lee said. "He owned the paint. Their big guys are quality and they have four quality shooters. They were on their game."
Moss walked away from his last interview of the night and caught up with best friend Robinson as they journeyed to their lockerroom. Side by side, they couldn't get enough of how good being state champs felt.
"I knew I had to do my part in this game and rebounding is the best part of my game," Moss said. "I was focused on doing that more than anything"
Corona expanded its lead from 16-11 after the opening period to 34-20 at halftime. Cesar Chavez guard, J.D. Reagan, the hero of Chavez's overtime win over Pinnacle on Thursday, was quiet in the first half. Both shots he made were threes, but he made just 2-of-11 shots in the half. Reagan heated up in the second half and finished with a game-high 27 points. Reagan made7 -of-11 shots in the second half. Six of his baskets overall were threes.
But by the time Reagan got in a groove it was too late. Corona's lead reached 52-33 after three periods. The Champions didn't have a substanial run in them in the second half, given how well Corona played.
"This was our third game of the week," Lee said. "We're small and the energy we expend with our style, we didn't come out strong. We got it going in the third quarter for awhile, but they were just too much for us."
