Jeff Lowery sank a 15-foot jumper  with 1:02 left in the game to give Desert Vista the lead for good and the Thunder made their free throws down the stretch Tuesday afternoon to nip Gilbert, 53-50, in a Division I boys quarterfinal game at ASU's Wells Fargo Arena.

Desert Vista (22-8), the No. 5 seed, advances to Thursday night's semifinal against Corona del Sol, a 69-54 winner over Brophy,  at 7:45 p.m. at Jobing.com Arena. No. 4 Gilbert, which was one of the surprise teams in 2011-2012, closed its season 21-7.

In  a nip-and-tuck fourth quarter, Gilbert took its final lead on two free throws by Erik Crawford after Crawford made a steal and drew a foul with 1:43 to play. Crawford finished with a team-high 21 points.

But Lowery's jumper -- DV's final basket of the game -- and 7-of-9 free throws in the final 55 seconds from John Marshall, Kyle Pitman, Danny Powell and Lowery sealed it for the Thunder.

Powell finished with a game-high 24 points, -- 16 in the second half. Lowery added 15 points. Desert Vista struggled from the free-throw line ion the first half, making just 6-of-13 attempts. The Thunder made 13 of 15 after intermission.
