Mesa Mountain View's girls soccer team has been in playoff mode for most of the season. After starting out 0-2 in power-point games, the Toros had little room for error over the next 10.
Prior to its regular-season finale Thursday night against defending state champ Hamilton, Mountain View had done its part to secure a playoff berth. The Toros had reeled off nine straight power-point wins.
The winnings streak came to halt , but the Toros appear to have reached the playoffs as the No. 16 seed after absorbing a decisive 5-0 defeat from visiting Hamilton.
"This has been the best record the school has had in girls soccer," Mountain View coach Brian Ronan said. "I believe we are 13-7 overall. Now we have to hope that 9-3 in power-point games is good enough to get us in."
Mountain View entered the night 14th in the power rankings. Five teams teams were right behind the Toros in the hunt for playoff spots -- Trevor Browne (15), Kofa (16), Perry (17) and Horizon (18).. Trevor Browne and Kofa won their matches Thursday, but Perry and Horizon lost. It's possible Mountain View will get a rematch with Hamilton soon -- if indeed Mountain View is No. 16 and Hamilton is No. 1 as late Thursday night power-rankings indicated.
On the Hamilton side, it was a very good night overall. Coach Mark Eggleston got to see his team play for the first time this season with the starting lineup he envisioned. Various injuries had prevented that. The Huskies (15-3-1, 10-2 ppg) were led by a four-goal effort from senior Meaghan Pasbrig. Pasbrig scored twice in the first half and twice in the second half. Freshman Kylie Miniefield scored the other goal. The Huskies got an added bonus nailing down the No. 1 seed after Chaparral knocked off Xavier, 3-2, in the regular-season finale for both of those schools.
Hamilton's first-half goals came two minutes apart in the 27th and 29th minute off a throw-in and a corner kick. Miniefield's goal in the 50th minute was off a throw in and Pasbrig's third goal was a header off a corner kick. Pasbrig tallied her final goal on a breakaway with five minutes left.
"The atmosphere had a playoff feel tonight," Eggleston said. "It was good see the 11 we had out there get to play together once before the playoffs. They had a chance to develop some rhythm."
