Mountain View's girls volleyball team has enjoyed a smooth beginning to its season unlike its opponent on Wednesday night, Xavier Prep.
The Toros played their 10th match and extended a current winning streak to six with a 25-17, 25-18, 22-25, 25-18 triumph over the visiting Gators.
Mountain View played its third power-point match in this one and and played seven matches in last week at the House of Payne Invitational at Chandler High. Xavier on the flip side has been deluged by COVID-19. The Gators had to push back their first week of matches. They have yet to play in a tournament and competed in just their second match of the season vs. Mtn. View.
Both schools are entertaining promising seasons with a number of key players back that saw Xavier reach the 2020 6A quarterfinals and Mountain View advance to the 6A semis.
Mountain View coach Clark Fleming saw his team take momentum from winning the Silver Pool title at House of Payne (sixth place).
"I was happy with most of what I saw tonight," Fleming said. "Winning the silver pool was a nice success, but it meant there were six teams better than us. We still need to improve on some things, but beating a good Xavier program is a plus."
Mountain View spread the wealth on the attack. Four players connected for double figures in kills unofficially. Junior Olivia Tukuafu led with 15, followed by Lexi Williams (11) and Aaliyah Austin and Reese Fischbeck with 10 apiece.
The Toros took the first two sets with an 8-0 run early in the opening set keeping Xavier at bay for routine win. The second set was much tougher with no more than a two-point lead for either team through the 18-point mark. Mountain View used an 11-3 run to go up, 2-0.
Xavier turned the tables in the third set in a see-saw battle. The Gators closed with a 6-1 run to force a fourth set with kills from Ava Larkin, Elle McCreery and Emma Soderstrom highlighting the run.
There was no drama in the fourth set as Mountain View took control early and criused through the set clincher. Seven different players collected a kill and no more than three in that final set for the Toros.
Xavier Prep has been working through a COVID-19 bubble at the school. They've been able to hold only 1 1/2 practices.
"We're behind, but that's what COVID can do," Xavier coach Lamar-Renee Bryant said. "This was our second match and we have another tomorrow (Thursday)....
"This one hurt. It's one of those matches that could come back to haunt us in the power rankings." Unofficial kill leaders for Xavier were Soderstrom (10) and Isabella Sinacori (9).
Both teams continue the week's schedule with matches on Thursday. Mountain View Corona del Sol and Xavier plays its first home match taking on Mountain Pointe.
