Hamilton wins turnaround match with Chandler in boys soccer

Back-to-back games with the same opponent have been more common in the computer scheduling era. Such was the case Thursday night when Hamilton and Chandler collided in boys soccer.
Playing for the second time in three days, Hamilton rebounded from a 2-1 defeat at Chandler on Tuesday to defeat its nearby rival, 2-0, in a Division I match at Hamilton High.
Hamilton (17-3 overall, 8-2 power-point games) scored its goals seven minutes apart fairly early in the second half. The Huskies relentless attack on Chandler's goal finally broke through in the 51st minute when high-scoring Daniel Arrubla rocketed one in from the right side of the box. He nestled it in the left corner past Chandler keeper Luis Mendoza, who had a handful of saves in each half but powerless to stop Arrubla's blast.
In the 58th minute, junior Luis Manta's header deflected off Mendoza at close range and landed softly in the net.
"We dominated the ball tonight like we did Tuesday," Hamilton coach Nick Markette said. "They got a PK the other night (and another goal late to beat us). Our kids came out with a burn in to make a statement in this one."
Chandler coach Sasha Hunter praised the play of Mendoza, who has stepped up as a keeper and normally a field player. Mendoza's record in goal for the Wolves was 5-0 heading into the match. Chandler is now 9-5-1 overall and 7-4 in power-point games.
"(Mendoza) did a first class job on Tuesday," Markette said. "He was the difference. Whats' nice about the rivalry is there is no bad blood. It's what's right about playing a rivalry. It's one of those games where the records or talent don't always mean anything."
Hunter knew it would be difficult to sweep Hamilton, especially at their field and with the loss fresh in Hamilton's memory bank.
"It's nice we split with them," Hunter said. "They're a powerhouse. We're still in the running (postseason). We'll see how we do next week (two games with Desert Vista)."
