Nogales High spiritline (stunt and cheer) coach Carolyn Hernandez has been selected as one of 20 coaches from across the country as 2011 National Coaches of the Year by the National Federation of High School Associations (NFHS) Coaches Association.

Hernandez guided Nogales to overall spiritline award for Co-ed Cheer in 4A in 2011 and the Apaches  partner-stunt team also finished first. Nogales placed second in Co-ed cheer after winning that category 11 years in a row 2000-2010.

"I think she's coached everything but football," Nogales athletic director Tim Colgate said. "Her program is outstanding."

Hernandez has taught and coached at Nogales for more than 30 years. Her coaching experience has not been limited to spirtline as she has also coached basketball, volleyball, softball and track.
