No Avery Moss. Corona del Sol's basketball team won nine games without him prior to his return to action on Tuesday. But no Moss and  Andrus Peat on Friday? No problem. Corona still won without them.

That event took place Friday afternoon as Corona shot lights out from 3-point range. The Aztecs also got standout guard Calaen Robinson to put on a dazzling shooting and scoring display and enjoyed the fruits of a deep team as they pounded American Fork, Utah, 77-56, on Day 4 of the 5th annual Visitmesa.com Basketball Challenge at Mesa Mountain View High School.

Corona del Sol improved to 13-1 and was the only Arizona team (among 11 entered) in the 17-team field this year to go unbeaten (4-0). American Fork entered the game 3-0 and Pinnacle, also 3-0, lost to South Sioux City, Neb. just prior to Corona's game, 79-76.. Moss and Peat were off attending high school all-star football workouts and also have dealt with football recruiting as basketball season began. The only other team to go unbeaten was Gahr (Cerritos, Calif.). after it beat Mesa Mountain View on Friday, 67-66. Gahr won its four games by a total of 11 points -- Mountain Pointe by three, Dobson by one, Chaparral by six and Mountain View.

"We are deep, but noone gets to see it because when we have everyone the other guys don't get the minutes," Corona del Sol coach Sam Duane Jr. said. "This team just finds a way to win."

Robinson, the ASU-bound senior, looked as though he wanted to pick up the slack for fellow seniors Moss and Peat. and he played like it. Robinson poured in 30 points, connecting on 11-of-18 shots. Among those shots he was 6-of-8  from 3-point range. Many of those were long-range 3s.

Robinson's teammates added six 3s of their own (6 for 11) with Jesse McCain, Casey Benson (11 points, six assists), Braden Tennyson and Bryan Siefker all sinking at least one trey.

McCain and Elijah Hempstead got the starts in place of Moss and Peat and were quite effective. McCain scored 12 points (10 in the first five minutes of the game) that helped Corona jump to an 18-5 lead. Hempstead scored six points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Two of his baskets were on the offensive glass. Hempstead often started for Moss when he was idled by a shoulder injury.

Tennyson and Adam Gleave received additional time Friday as reserves and responded seven and four points, respectively.

Corona's only trouble spot came in the final minutes of the first half and early moments of the second half.  American Fork (8-1) cut a 19-point deficit in the first half to 10 at intermission. It further sliced the deficit to 44-40 with 13 minutes to play. Two minutes later the lead ws back to double digits and American Fork wasn't able to make another legimate push.

American Fork had three players score in double figures -- Marcel Davis (17), Quincy Bair (13) and Zac Hunter (12).

In the other marquee game on Day 4, South Sioux City got eight points in the final three minutes from standout guard Mike Gesell to edge previously tournament unbeaten Pinnacle, 79-76.

Gesell hit two tough 12- to 15-foot jumpers and four free throws down the stretch to give his team its second tourney win against one loss. Gesell finished with 37 points and is averaging 35.7 per game in the tournament. Teammate Austin Groth added 27 points. Pinnacle sophomore Dorian Pickens continued his solid play in the tournament with 27 points. Pinnacle's Drew Bender added 13 points, eight assists and six rebounds. Pinnacle is now 14-2 on the season and South Sioux City is 6-1. Sout Sioux City rallied from a 12-point deficit in the first half to lead  by five (56-51) with 10:22 to play behind Gesell and Groth. They never trailed after that, but had Pinnacle on their heels to the finish.
