There was no lull in Sunnyslope's performance in its rescheduled HoopHall West contest Saturday afternoon with Chaparral.
In its win over Brophy on Friday, Sunnyslope's performance was erratic. The Vikings trailed nearly the entire first half and were down by as many as nine in the second period. An 11-0 run to end the half put them ahead and the run extended to 18-0 before Brophy scored in the third period. Brophy mounted a comeback that got it within four in the final minutes.
Unlike that topsy-turvy game the night before, Sunnyslope left no doubt to this outcome. Led by strong play inside from Grady Lewis in the middle periods and a strong first quarter from the others starters Malcolm Olexa, Oakland Fort, Elijah Saunders and Liam Thompson, the Vikings added to their unblemished record with a solid 61-45 win over the Firebirds at Dan Mannix Gymnasium. Sunnyslope is 5-0 adding four wins to its total this week. Chaparral is 4-4 after getting a win over Mountain Ridge the night before.

Lewis, a 6-foot-8 senior post, excelled in the low block despite missing a big chunk of the first quarter when he exited for medical attention. He scored early in the first via a three-point play off an offensive rebound. In the middle two periods he took off scoring 10 points in each of quarter. Lewis finished with a game-high 25 points, making 10 of 13 field goals. In the win less than 24 hours earlier vs. Brophy, Lewis netted what was then a season-high 24 points.
"Grady's playing well and he's only getting better," Sunnyslope coach Ray Portela said. "We are at our best when we play together. It doesn't matter to guys who scores. Our program's been blessed with kids who are unselfish."
Saunders, a junior stationed at the high post, consistently got the ball to Lewis in the third period for the majority of his five baskets in that quarter. "They really work well together," Portela said.
Sunnyslope established a good lead after the first period (18-9). Fort and Olexa and Saunders scored five points each to highlight the quarter. That Viking maintained that advantage (33-24 at half and 48-38 after three quarters). Chaparral got a quick bucket from Markes Siekman to begin the fourth quarter, to pull within eight, but Sunnyslope dismissed a rally with a 13-0 run over the next four minutes. Fort (17 points) scored nine of the runs' 13 points. Olexa was Sunnyslope's third player in double figures with 12 points.
Chaparral had three players reach double digits - Michael Saba (11) and Siekman and Jevon Humphrey with 10 points each. Sunnyslope is back at it Monday and Tuesday with road games at Apollo and Shadow Ridge, respectively. Chaparral's next game is home Tuesday. A region rematch with high-scoring Liberty.
