More basketball state previews

January 20, 2021 by Jose Garcia, AZPreps365

Sunrise Mountain, the 5A runner-up last season, got off to a strong start this season. azpreps365.com photo.

Arizona's high school basketball season tipped off Tuesday for girls.

For Sunrise Mountain, it just needed a quarter to take control against 5A Northwest Region rival Centennial. The masks Sunrise Mountain wore didn't seem to slow the girls down during their 79-34 home victory.

A few parents attended the game, but the masks didn't completely hide all the ear-to-ear smiles of players who were allowed to play this season. Because of the pandemic, every winter sports team will need to don masks during competition.

Reena Bhakta (19 points), Ysabel Puente (17 points) and Julie Diveney (13 points) led the way for Sunrise Mountain, last year's 5A runner-up.

Centennial sophomore center Kiley Miller led all scorers with 20.
