Chandler High was the first team in Arizona's second try Thursday to break through and notch a division title as the Lady Wolves completed a 4-0 tourney run with a 69-56 victory over Mission Bay of San Diego, Calif. in the Black Division final at Hamilton High School.
For the second day in a row Chandler (9-3) rallied from a halftime deficit (this one not as large as Wednesday's) and pretty much won going away. Senior pont guard Dezirae Elias and senior guard Simone Westbrook keyed a second-half rally. The duo scored 18 points apiece.
Westbrook scored nine of her 18 points in the third period as Chandler outscored Mission Bay, 18-5, in the quarter. Elias hit couple of jumpers in the third period and her three-point play and steal that fed Jesse Ossian (12 points) for a layup turned back Mission Bay's final attempt to rally in the fourth period.
"When Desirae gets into a zone it's hard to bring her out of it," Chandler coach Zon Thompson said.
Thompson had just reprimanded Elias for a careless few seconds of play that saw Mission Bay slice a 54-41 deficit in half in the final periodf. Eiias came back after a timeout and made her three-point play and steal that put the game away.
Thompson was also pleased with the rapid maturation of junior post Jasmyne Bartee, who held her own on the boards and contributed 12 points to the Lady Wolves' cause. Bartee has had to pick up some of the slack in the absence of senior post Je Zhe Newton, who is out indefinitely and possibly the season with a knee injury.
In the noon title game matching Desert Vista with Centennial High (Corona, Calif.),in the Gray Division, Desert Vista struggled in the second half and dropped a 69-58 decision. The loss snapped a nine-game winning streak for the Thunder, who also has losses to Pinnacle and Highland.
Desert Vista coach Rachel Poudfoot didn't think a sluggish second half was the problem.
"We broke down I thought in the first quarter," Proudfoot said. "We didn't have the same intensity we had the other games in the tournament..... Overall it was a great tournament. Today was a little disappointing."
Kylie Butler led Desert Vista with 25 points and Jaymee Brugman added 13. A strong third period by Centennial forward Aleiah Brandon (11 of her 18 points) established Centennial's second-half dominance.
