Chandler High's attempt to reach the finals in its Nike Tournament of Champions division wasn't going well with 4:40 left in the third quarter on Wednesday.
The Lady Wolves had fallen back by the biggest margin of the day -- 36-27 -- to Eastlake High of Sammamish, Wash They needed a spark.
Got it, too. Senior guard Simone Westbrook connected on a four-point play to begin a huge offensive run for herself and Chandler as the Lady Wolves stormed back for a 68-61 victory in the Black Division semfinals at Basha High.
Eastlake had turned back Chandler's pressure tactics most of the way, breaking the Lady Wolves pressure for a few layups and some timely threes - four in the first three periods to lead nearly all the way. But a 3-point field goal by Jesse Ossian and Westbrook's four-point play opened the floodgates for a rally finall overtook Eastlake early in the final period.
"We finally fed off the energy from Simone and the defense," Chandler coach Zon Thompson said. "We're still putting the pieces together. We've had injuries, we've been sick. It's not all there yet. We played five maybe six players today. It's nice to have Mo (Westbrook) back."
Chandler has been without three-year starter and post Je Zhe Newton all season with a knee injury. Westbrook was playing just her second game and made up for lost time with a gigantic effort. Scoring just two points and going 1-for-7 from the field for the better part of half, Westbrook scored 26 points in the final 12 minutes to finish with a game-high 28. A pair of penetration layups to open the final period tied the game at 45 and after Ossian hit a jumper with 7:11 to play, Chandler had the lead for good at 47-45.
Westbrook, who is headed to Arizona next fall, made 15 of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter and 19-of-21 for the game. Guards Ossian and Kylene Knutsen, who have combined to average 25 points a game this season, did it again with 13 and 12, respectively. Senior guard Dezirae Elias, who averaged 17 a game heading to Wednesday's game, finished with nine but combined with Westbrook to wreak havoc defensively with the Lady Wolvesnever-ending traps and double teams.
"Contributions are being made," Thompson said, pointing to Ossian, Knutsen and Elias along with athletic play in the post from junior Jazmyne Bartee. "We want to continue putting the pieces together and then be ready to go hard around Jan. 16 like we've done in the past."
Chandler (8-3) faces red-hot Mission Bay (San Diego, Calif.) in the Black Division final on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Hamilton High. Mission Bay, with a roster of eight players, has posted wins of 31, 18 and 31 points in its three tournament games thus far.
Eastlake was led in scoring by guard Caleigh McCabe with 18 points, Lauren Files 13 (off the bench) and 11 from Kendra Morrison.
