Dobson triumphs over Chandler behind Tipton, Tomlinson

Dobson and Chandler opened the their basketball seasons last week with preseason tournaments they co-hosted and came away with solid results. Dobson was 4-1 in the Catalina Hardwood Classic and Chandler 3-2 in the Salpointe Tip-Off Classic.
Those games were a nice start, but Tuesday their meeting was more meaningful with the start of power-point games. Dobson found little resistance from Chandler after the first six minutes of the game and rolled to an 81-57 conquest at Dobson High.
Seniors Kyle Tomlinson and Marcus Tipton took turns dominating inside to lead the way for Dobson. Tomlinson, getting contested on his first two shots and looking to face a physical contest from Chandler's Kisima Jagne and or Javon Williams early on, was dynamite after the first two misses. He made his next 10 shots from the field in a row -- 10 points in the first period and 11 in the second. Only two of the shots were from the perimeter. He finished with a game-high 25 points and Tipton added 24.
"We've played pretty well so far," Dobson coach Rick McConnell said. "We have a great bunch of kids. They play together and complement each other. Tonight we really got the ball to people in good spots."
Layups were the "good spot" and Dobson had more than any team should have in a game. The Mustangs were 26-of-41 from the field the first three quarters and graduallyl grew their lead (24-17 after one period, 41-28 at halftime and 62-41 after three periods).
In the second half, Tipton, the Mustangs 6-foot-5 center, took over inside and assumed Tomlinson's hot hand. Tipton made 5-of-5 shots in the third period -- all layups either by posting up or receiving an alley-oop pass from teammates.
"We want to get the ball to Marcus a lot," McConnell said. "We handled their press early and we're aggressive getting the ball to Kyle and Marcus."
The high-scoring newcomer to Dobson's offensive effort Tuesday was sophomore guard Kodi Justice. The 6-4 Justice made a handful of perimeter shots among his six field goals and tallied 17 points.
Chandler was led by guard Omar Lee, a transfer from Marcos de Niza. Lee scored 18 points. Williams scored 15, the only other Chandler player in double figures.
