When Anthony Miller took over as Coronado’s athletic director this year, he wanted to add a college student to help his staff. However, he didn’t even have to leave campus to find his new intern.

“He was one of the first people when I took the job here to come and introduce himself to me,” said Miller.

Luis Esqueda is a senior on Coronado’s basketball and football team this year. During the second semester, he found himself idle waiting for basketball practice.

“I like helping people out, I was always here so instead of sitting around I wanted to make my time useful.” 

So Miller offered him the internship. 

“I think he now sees the amount of work that goes into preparing for events,” said Miller, “It’s 100 things more than he could have ever imagined.”

Miller said he has lightened the load by setting up sound systems, digital marquees, scoreboards, water coolers, chairs, and bleachers. 

“He's always got a smile on his face, and in our department we need someone with a smile on their face.”

He described the program as a way to help students who could use guidance at their young age. In previous years, he has used the internship as a mentorship as well.

“But Luis has a great head on his shoulders, I don’t have to worry about that with him.”

Miller also said Esqueda manages his time well and has an excellent work ethic.

“I learned that from sports and school. I’ve always had to work as well so I always have to make time for each of those.”

His mother instilled good habits of being on time and reliability. And as the oldest child, he learned to be helpful to those around him.

“It’s not just athletics,” said Miller.

They have had many conversations about life. 

“He loves the athletic department and I want him to be a part of it,” said Miller, “but I need to give him the skills he needs to be successful in life.”

Both said that the internship has benefited them.

“He makes life easier for me and in turn I'm going to write him a letter of recommendation to college or a job based on his work ethic,” said Miller.

“I want to impact as many kids as I can. That is what’s important to me.”
