Willow Canyon’s Flores throws no-hitter in 20-0 rout of South Mountain

SURPRISE, Ariz.- A no-hitter by Willow Canyon senior Jando Flores put the finishing touch on a dominant victory against South Mountain on Wednesday night.
“I think tonight went really good, especially for how I did,” Flores said. “My approach to the plate was just to start off with a strike, that’s all I was looking for, because if I start off with a strike I can get ahead. Then, I can throw the off-speed I was looking for, that was working tonight.”
Flores finished the night with five strikeouts in five innings pitched. This was his first career no-hitter at the high school level.
“It was overpowering for the team that we played,” head coach Orlando Rodriquez said. “He looked good, it was his first start of the season, especially being a home opener for us, being a senior, he’s been with me for three years. [He] came in and did his job.”
The offense found its groove, scoring 20 runs on 11 hits as the Jaguars pitchers weren’t able to find their command, walking 10 batters and allowing the Wildcats to run on them at will.
“That’s our game plan every game,” Rodriquez said. “We’re coming in to give their defense a hard time and bring chaos on the base paths where they don’t want us to be on the base. When we are, we’re just going to run on them and make them make plays on us.”
Senior Josiah Meek had a huge night offensively with two triples and five RBIs. But he wouldn’t take all the credit for his contributions.
“I think I did good, I think the team overall though, did really good too,” Meek said. “I mean I wouldn’t have gotten any RBIs if it wasn’t for my teammates so it’s not all on me.”
Another key performer on offense came from senior Taylor Wurtele, who was hitting third in the lineup. He racked up three hits and three RBIs in four at-bats.
The big inning for the Wildcats came in the second when they produced nine runs after scoring two runs in the first inning.
South Mountain’s numerous defense mistakes gave Willow Canyon plenty of chances to score, and the Wildcats took advantage of that.
On Tuesday, Willow Canyon played crosstown rival Shadow Ridge and won 4-1 after a game-changing triple play that swung the momentum in the game.
“We took care of business,” Rodriquez said. “We come out from an emotional big win last night to a team that can give us trouble if we’re not prepared. The boys came in and did their job.”
Wednesday night’s win improves the school’s record to 3-0, matching the same start the program had last season.
The next game for Willow Canyon is Thursday against Centennial on the road. The Wildcats will attempt to win their first four games of the season for the first time since 2015.
