Blue Ridge jolts Seton Catholic in battle of D-IV unbeatens

Short drives. Long drives, Big plays. And of course, plenty of defense.

That described Blue Ridge on Saturday night  as the Yellow Jackets earned a return trip to the championship game Division IV/3A with a 45-14 thumping of previously unbeaten Seton Catholic in a D-IV semi at Paradise Valley High School.

Blue Ridge (13-0) cranked out 535 yards of offense through three quarters in building a 45-6 lead. The Yellow Jackets get a title rematch with Show Low on Nov. 26 at 3:30 p.m. at  NAU. Show Low advanced by beating Florence in the other semifinal. Show Low and Blue Ridge met in late October with Blue Ridge pulling out a 10-9 win. It will be Blue Ridge's fourth title-game appearance in a row.

In eliminating Seton, Blue Ridge was crisp on offense and took the early lead after an interception by Zane Gouker that  gave his team the ball at Seton' 17.  It took eight plays, but power back Chans Cox bulled in from the 1 on fourth-and-goal for a 7-0 lead with 4:41 left in the first period. Cox was the grind-it-out back, carrying 21 times for 102 yards and two TDs.

Smaller, but quicker and shifty Danny Groebner gave Seton the biggest headache. The 5-foot-10, 160-pound senior carried 12 times for 216 yards and three touchdowns. Groebner hauled in the first of Blue Ridge's big-play TDs, completing a 49-yard catch and run from quarterback Skyler Hill just three minutes after their initial score.

Seton manged only two first downs on its first five possessions, but was anxious to make something happen after a 58-yard punt pinned Blue Ridge back at its own 6 with 6:21 left in the first half.

On the first play after the punt, Groebner slipped through a hole and made a cut to the outside. He picked up a key downfield block at about the 25 and that sprung him for a 94-yard TD

Seton gave its fans a brief glimmer of hope answering Groebner's long gallop with 67-yard march in 46 seconds. A 39-yard pass completion from quarterback Ryan Bresnahan to Daniel Garlid, a Bresnahan 29-yard scramble and A.J. Ciferno's 1-yard run put Seton on the board.

But Blue Ridge added a 9-play 80-yard TD drive and a Groebner field goal on the last play of the first half to take a 31-6 lead to the break.

Bresnahan entered the game passing for 3,002 yards, 50 TDs and just two interceptions. Blue Ridge limited him to a 17-of-33 night for 283 yards and two picks. The last 111 came in the final period against Blue Ridge reserves. Bresnahan found his favorite target on the season -- Adam Engelbert -- for his only TD pass of the game.
