Alyssa Brown scores 38 points and breaks 2,000 career points to lead Sahuaro past Moon Valley

No. 3 Sahuaro beat No. 14 Moon Valley 60-38 Wednesday night to advance to the quarterfinal round of the 4A state playoffs where the Cougars will face No. 6 Mesquite at home on Saturday, Feb. 22. Sahuaro (26-1) was led by junior standout Alyssa Brown and her game-high 38 points.

Brown came into the game needing 19 points to break 2,000 in her career and she reached that mark moments into the second quarter. Now with 2,019 career points, Brown became the eighth player from Southern Arizona to reach 2,000 career points and the 31st in Arizona history. Only a junior, Brown needs 276 more points to break into the top ten in Arizona History.

Alyssa Franke added eight points and Lily Watson scored seven for the Cougars. Moon Valley (17-12) was led by junior Yvette Ruiz with 12 points while freshman Maya Land and senior Lexi Dominguez scored seven each.

The Rockets finished 8-17 last year and missed the playoffs while Sahuaro made it to the semifinal round. Mesquite (19-11) beat No. 11 Estrella Foothills 56-37 to set up the quarterfinal game at Sahuaro. The Wildcats also made it to the 4A semifinals last year.

Top-seeded Seton Catholic (23-3) and No. 2 Shadow Mountain (24-3) also advanced but No. 4 Greenway was (18-4) was upset at home by No. 13 Rio Rico 57-50. Rio Rico (22-6) will take on No. 5 Flagstaff (24-5).
