Dan Dunn resigns as FB coach at Gilbert High

Dan Dunn's second tour of duty as football coach at Gilbert High has ended.
Dunn submitted his intention to resign nearly a month ago and made it official this week after meeting with the school's administration. Dunn deliberated for several weeks as to whether or not he wanted to continue.
Dunn, who coached Gilbert the first time in the early 1970s through the early 1980s with three state titles and three runners-up to his credit , took over again in 2009 to replace Jesse Parker after Parker resigned following the 2008 season. Dunn coached the Tigers the last three years posting a 15-18 record with one playoff appearance (2010) in that span. Gilbert was 5-5 this past season.
"I''ve been teaching mathematics and coaching football and right now I don't think I'm doing either job well," Dunn said. "They are something you have to give a lot of energy to. I need to be doing at least one well and not both half(way)."
Dunn did not rule out remaining as an assistant at Gilbert if the direction the school takes in hiring a new coach allows it. After after losing three assistants over the past year to a head coaching job, an assistant at another school and an assistant at MCC, it left him with a heavy load taking care of the program and the 160 kids involved.
"I have 17 emails today I haven't even gotten to," Dunn said. "If I was coaching football I couldn't get it all done. Not in the way it should be done. I'm going to continue to take care of the seniors who want to go on to college."
Dunn is the fourth East Valley football coach to step down since November. Alex Jacobsen resigned at Dobson the first week of November and Westwood coach Greg Mendez did so a week later. Mike Vezzosi also stepped away from Combs High School this month. All held their positions for four years or less.
