GIRLS 3A HOOPS
WINDOW ROCK 54, KAYENTA MONUMENT VALLEY 53
Window Rock senior Bayle Talkalai knocked down a basket with three seconds remaining in the game to lift the Lady Scouts to a 54-53 victory over Kayenta Monument Valley Lady Mustangs in 3A North Region action in Nash Center in Kayenta on Friday night.
The Lady Mustangs took a 15-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Scouts outscored the Lady Mustangs, 7-5, in the second quarter. Kayenta Monument Valley held a 20-11 halftime lead.
The teams began playing uptempo basketball in the third quarter. The Lady Mustangs and the Lady Scouts both scored 23 points. The Lady Mustangs held a 43-34 lead. Window Rock tallied 20 points in the fourth period, while Kayenta Monument Valley netted 10 points.
Jana Solee poured in 18 points and Bayle Talkalai added 11 points for Window Rock.
"We played soft in the first half," said Window Rock head coach Sharon Toadecheenie. "We executed offensively in the second half. Players stepped up when needed to. We knew MV was hungry to win. It was a great team effort tonight."
Window Rock entertains Page Lady Sand Devils, (2-3 region, 13-5 overall), today at 3 p.m. in a 3A North Region encounter at the Events Center at Window Rock High School in Fort Defiance.
Angel Holiday topped Kayenta Monument Valley with 15 points. Sheridan Curley added 14 points for the Lady Mustangs.
Kayenta Monument Valley visits Chinle Wildcats on January 28 for a 3A North Region game.
GIRLS 3A HOOPS
WINSLOW 63, PAYSON 22
The Winslow Lady Bulldogs chalked up an impressive 63-22 victrory over the Payson Longhorns in 3A East Region girl's basketball action.
Winslow raced out to a 15-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Winslow tallied 17 points and Payson netted five points. Winslow took a 32-11 lead at halftime.
The Lady Bulldogs tallied 15 points and Payson canned nine points. Winslow took a 47-20 advantage when the third quarter ended. Winslow hit for 16 points and Payson scored two points during the fourth quarter.
Oniah Barton Paddock led Winslow with 14 points. Kylie Begay tallied 11 points for the Lady Bulldogs.
"My team had a good win, where every team member played," said Winslow head coach Jerron Jordan.
Winslow hosts the Snowflake Lobos on January 28 in Don Petranovich Gymnasium in Winslow in 3A East Region action.
BOYS 3A HOOPS
WINSLOW 83, PAYSON 46
Tyrell Young, Zeke Martinez and Zachary Wagner combined for 48 points to help lead Winslow Bulldogs to an 83-46 victory over the Payson Longhorns in 3A East Region boy's basketball action on Friday night.
Young poured in 20 points, Martinez added 16 points and Wagner chipped in 12 points in a winning effort for the Bulldogs.
"We got off to a great start, scoring 30 points in the first quarter," said Winslow head coach Scott Corum. "Tyrell (Young) scored 11 of his 20 points in the first quarter and Zachard (Wagner) added eight points in the first quarter."
Corum said the Bulldogs continue to shot well from the three-point arc.
"We had another strong night from the three-point range, knocking down 12 three-pointers," Corum said. "We had great scoring balance with nine players getting in the scoring column."
Winslow took a 30-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Longhorns outscored the Bulldogs, 15-13, in the second period. Winslow took a 43-20 into the locker room for halftime.
The Bulldogs canned 28 points in the third quarter to Payson's 13 points. Winslow continued its lead, 71-33, at the end of the third quarter. Payson knocked down 13 points and Winslow tallied 12 points in the fourth quarter.
Winslow entertains the Snowflake Lobos on January 28 in a 3A East Region game.
BOYS 3A HOOPS
KAYENTA MONUMENT VALLEY 58, WINDOW ROCK 57
Kayenta Monument Valley Mustangs celebrated winter homecoming, posting a 58-57 victory over the Window Rock Scouts in 3A North Region boy's basketball play in 3A North Region action in Kayenta on Friday night.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 17-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. Window Rock outscored Kayenta Monument Valley, 15-6, to take a 24-23 halftime lead.
The Scouts canned 18 points and the Mustangs netted 16 points to take a 42-39 advantage at the end of the third period. Kayenta Monument Valley poured in 19 points and Window Rock tallied 15 points during the fourth period.
Albrandon Byjoe tallied 22 points to lead Kayenta Monument Valley.
Window Rock's Cauy Silversmith led all scorers with 26 points. Quincy Smith added 10 points for the Scouts.
"Time management down the stretch hurt us," said Window Rock head coach Tom Bizardi. "Three of our starters in the last two minutes were out, due to an injury and leg cramps. We needed experience in the last minute to seal it, but we had it slip away."
Window Rock, (1-2 region, 11-10 overall), entertain 3A No. 1 ranked Page Sand Devils, (5-0 region, 18-1 overall), today at 4:30 p.m. in 3A North Region action in the Events Center in Fort Defiance.
Kayenta Monument Valley will be on the road at Chinle on January 28 in 3A North Region play.
