Girls, boys hoops: No. 15 Chinle Lady 'Cats knocks off No. 3 Page; No. 33 Blue Ridge beats No. 4 Winslow boys

GIRLS
CHINLE 45, PAGE 40
No. 16 Chinle Lady Wildcats knocked off No. 3 Page Lady Sand Devils, 45-40, in an important 3A North Region girl's basketball game in the Wildcat Den at Chinle on Tuesday night.
En route to winning its contest, Chinle (3-3 region, 11-7 overall) has won five of its past seven games.
Page (2-3 region, 13-5 overall) has dropped its last three games, including three region contests.
Chinle head coach Fran McCurtain was proud of the Lady Wildcats effort.
"The grls followed and executed the game plan together," McCurtain said. "All efforts were made on defense and the girls were able to defend Page. We distributed the ball, but had too many turnovers at the end, where Page made eight points less than a minute with two three's and one lay up."
McCurtain added, "We didn't defend well at the end, but good thing we were up by 12 and we made crucial free throws. We were 9-of-11 in the fourth quarter. It was a great team effort. We ended up winning by five points and a much needed win as well. Great play by both teams."
Chinle and Page each canned 10 points apiece in the first quarter. The Lady Wildcats outscored Page, 14-2, in the second quarter, to take a 24-12 halftime lead.
Page battled back in the third period, canning 11 points. Chinle scored eight points. Chinle held a 32-29 advantage as the third quarter. The Lady Sand Devils outscored the Lady Wildcats, 17-13, during the fourth quarter.
Sophomore post Aisha Ashley poured in 22 points to lead Chinle. Brandii Clah added seven points for the Lady Wildcats.
Chinle entertains Tuba City (3-1 region, 13-5 overall) this Thursday, January 23 at 6 p.m. in the Wildcat Den in Chinle.
Emma Yazzie canned 10 points and Torrence Begay tallied 11 points for Page.
Page will travel to Window Rock (1-2 region, 12-5 overall) this Saturday, January 25 to face the Lady Scouts in the Events Center in Fort Defiance at 3 p.m.
GIRLS
WINSLOW 72, BLUE RIDGE 27
The Winslow Lady Bulldogs continued its winning ways, after defeating Blue Ridge, 72-27, in a 3A East Region game on Tuesday night.
Winslow raced out to a 28-6 first quarter advantage. The Lady Bulldogs netted 17 points to Blue Ridge's eight points. Winslow held a 45-14 halftime lead.
Winslow knocked down 18 points to Blue Ridge's six points in the third quarter. The Lady Bulldogs built its lead to 63-20 at the end of the third frame. Winslow outscored Blue Ridge, 9-7, in the fourth period.
Winslow sophomore standout Kylie Begay lead all scorers with 23 points. Oniah Barton Paddock poured in 14 points and Andrea Willeto tallied 13 points for Winslow.
"My team had a a good all around team effort," said Winslow head coach Jerron Jordan.
Winslow (2-1 region, 12-8 overall) entertains Payson (2-8 overall) this Friday, January 24.
BOYS
PAGE 61, CHINLE 46
No. 1 Page Sand Devils chalked up a 61-46 victory over No. 6 Chinle in a 3A North Region boy's basketball game in the Wildcat Den in Chinle on Tuesday night.
Page improved to 5-0 in 3A North Region play and the Sand Devils are 17-1 overall.
Chinle dropped to 4-2 in region play and 16-8 overall.
Page held a 16-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. Chinle outscored Page, 16-14, in the second quarter. The Ssnd Devils continued to lead at halftime, 30-27.
Page shot well in the third period, canning 15 points, while Chinle managed six points. Page held a 45-33 at the end of the third period. Page netted 16 points to Chinle's 13 points in the fourth stanza.
"We didn't take care of the ball in the first half - 13 turnovers - and we did a very poor job on boxing out," said Chinle head coach Raul Mendoza.
Chinle senior standout Cooper Burbank tallied 13 points. Sophomore guard Kylen Yazzie tallied 11 points for Chinle.
Robert Smith and Gabe Gomez both scored 16 points to lead Page. Stuart Sandall added 10 points and Jonah Holiday chipped in nine points for Page.
Chinle entertains Tuba City (1-3 region, 8-9 overall) this Thursday, January 23 in the Wildcat Den in Chinle at 7:30 p.m.
Page travels to Window Rock (1-2 region, 11-9 overall) this Saturday, January 25 at 4:30 p.m. in the Events Center in Fort Defiance.
BOYS
BLUE RIDGE 88, WINSLOW 76 (2 OT's)
The No. 33 Blue Ridge Yellowjackets outlasted the No. 4 Winslow Bulldogs, 88-76, in two overtimes in 3A East Region boy's basketball action on Tuesday night in Lakeside.
The game was tied 67-67 when regulation time expired. After four minutes was completed, the game was knotted 71-71 at the end of the second overtime. Blue Ridge outscored Winslow, 17-5, in the second overtime to prevail.
Blue Ridge held a two-point lead, 20-18, at the end of the first period. Winslow tallied 14 points and Blue Ridge netted 13 points in the second quarter. The Yellowjackets continued to lead, 33-32, at halftime.
Winslow battled back in the third quarter, outscoring Blue Ridge, 20-17, to take a 52-50 advantage.. The Yellowjackets netted 17 points to the Bulldogs' 15 points, tying the game as 32 minutes of play expired.
Winslow head coach Scott Corum said the game was tough to lose.
"We had several opportunities to put the game away," Corum said. "We missed six free throws in overtime. Blue Ridge played well. They just wouldn't go away. It really hurt us when Dustin Richard fouled out in the fourth quarter. We shot well from three point range, making eight."
Winslow (2-1 region, 16-6 overall) host the Payson Longhorns (0-3 region, 4-14 overall) this Friday, January 24 at 7:30 p.m.
